VIENNA INSURANCE GROUP - SECURING MOBILE DEVICES
OMNIASIG Vienna Insurance Group, the leader of the business segment on general insurance market offers insurance products and services both for the safety of natural persons, and for the protection of businesses. The wide range of products for the safety of natural persons consists of car, house, health, travel and work insurances.
An important process when delivering these products is the evaluation of damages, a process that by its own nature requires precision and control. A non-secured management of data resulted from these assessments may bring important financial losses within the company. In order to prevent the occurrence of such situations, OMNIASIG Vienna Insurance Group has decided to deploy a platform for the management of mobile devices that, combined with a “witness” application, shall allow the secure reporting of all incidents.
The project aimed to satisfy the client’s need to secure their mobile devices and to limit the functions of these devices. The main objective was to limit the access to only one application software, developed by experts within VIG IT department, which must work in conjunction with the mobile phones’ capabilities i.e. Internet access, camera and GPS facilities.
In addition, other important requirements for the project were user identity verification before authorizing the use of the application, and the possibility to delete data and applications from the device in case of its loss or theft.

Datanet Systems has been the integrator chosen by VIG, after a competitive analysis, to implement a “Mobile Device Management” system in order to meet the above-mentioned requirements.
The system comprises two servers and a series of software clients running on the entire VIG’s fleet of mobile devices intended for the incident reporting application software. The servers are integrated with Active Directory to ensure the secured access by using standardized methods of authentication.
The system provides these features:
- Ensures the verification of the user’s identity before granting access to the mobile device.
- Allows the automatic and centralized installation of applications on the fleet of mobile devices.
- Does not allow users to install software applications.
- Allows the deployment of security policies, in a consistent manner, on the entire fleet of mobile devices.
- Grants users access only to those mobile devices’ applications and functions that comply with the company’s security policies.
- Reports in a centralized manner all attempts to violate the security policies.
- Keeps the company’s information on the device in an encrypted format.
- Sends in an encrypted manner the company’s information via the mobile device’s data connection.
- Allows the deletion of company’s data and applications in case of loss or theft of the mobile device.
Given the purpose of the deployment, the Datanet specialists were required to carry out a detailed evaluation of the devices to establish the weak points and to fix them by means of the platform.
For this purpose, the Airwatch Secure Locker application was used, an application intended to limit the launch of applications and the access to the native functions of the operating system.
Once the weak points are determined, the AirWatch Secure Launcher was set up to allow only the usage of the application known as Risk Inspector, transforming the terminal into a kiosk-type device.
The solution deployed by Datanet has ensured the limiting of the operating system on Vienna Insurance Group mobile devices, by using a proprietary application launcher.
The deployment of the platform has reduced the necessary time by 60% for preparing the devices in order to use the Risk Inspector application, and has also enabled their granular configuration, in an automatic manner, by using limiting profiles in compliance with the company’s security policies.
Following this deployment, OMNIASIG Vienna Insurance Group benefits from a unified management solution for mobile devices through which they can manage terminals remotely and they can secure information and access to company resources.
The project undergoes ongoing development, the platform allowing the use of devices for new applications and future integrations with systems such as Microsoft Exchange for secured e-mail or Microsoft Sharepoint for secured collaboration.
